The Maryland Heights Cultural Arts Commission will host a special free concert event with the Kingsbury Ensemble at Maryland Heights Centre, 2344 McKelvey Road, on Sunday, April 5. The concert will begin at 2 p.m., and the performance will be followed by reception featuring dessert catered by Papaya Grill and Catering, flowers provided by K & V Florist and a question-and-answer session with the musicians. Children are welcome; however, if they become restless, guests may feel free to come and go as necessary.

The Kingsbury Ensemble has earned a reputation as one of the premier professional early music groups in the Midwest. The group strives to stage authentic performances of music from the Renaissance to the early romantic period, giving listeners the opportunity to experience this timeless music as its original audiences did.

Formed in 1999 under the artistic direction of Maryse Carlin, the Ensemble performs exclusively on period instruments, combining respect for historical style and scholarship with exciting musicianship and flair. In addition to Carlin at the harpsichord, musicians include Jessica Goodenough-Heuser, soprano; Clea Galhano, recorder; Margaret Humphrey, violin; and Ken Kulosa, cello.

The program planned for the April 5 concert is "Folias of Spain and Italy." The Folia is an ancient dance tune from Spain that became popular all over Europe. It has been used as a theme for variations by composers from the Baroque era to contemporary times. The group’s selections will include pieces by Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Falconieri and others.
