In April, Allied Waste will begin using automated residential solid waste pickup in Maryland Heights. Automated trash service uses trucks with mechanical arms that lift the container and deposit trash into a compacting truck.

The week of April 7, Allied Waste will deliver a 95-gallon container to every single family household in the city. The new container has wheels, an attached lid and a sturdy bottom.
“The heavy-duty container will limit complaints about trash cans rolling in the street on windy days and lids that do not get replaced on the cans,” Pearl said. “It will also reduce the number of containers placed at the curb on collection day.”
Residents will no longer need to provide their own trash containers. If you are currently renting a cart from Allied for trash, you will no longer receive a bill for this cart. Rental fees will still apply for yard waste carts.
If the standard 95-gallon container is too large for your household, residents may call and request a 65-gallon trash container. Similarly, residents may request a 95-gallon recycling container in lieu of the standard 65-gallon container.
“Depending on what kind of waste a household produces, residents may select the container size that works best for them,” Pearl said.
The first day of collection with the new carts will be Monday, April 19. Because the automated system allows Allied to collect trash more efficiently, residents’ collection days will change under the new system. Each household will receive a package of materials by mail that will indicate your neighborhood’s new collection day. Recyclables will be collected on the same day as trash.
Yard waste collection days will also change; yard waste will now be collected the day prior to trash and recyclables. For example, if your trash and recyclables are collected on Tuesday, your yard waste will be collected on Monday. If your trash and recyclables are collected on Monday, your yard waste will be collected on Friday.
The new agreement will result in savings to the city of more than $640,000 over the next seven years.
“During these difficult economic times, the new agreement is a fiscally responsible solution for the city and an opportunity to improve our current residential solid waste, recycling and yard waste services,” Mayor Mike Moeller said.
