Since the summer of 1986, the city has hosted more than 100 interns. The majority of these internships were part of the summer internship program which provides students in various disciplines with a 12-week, full-time paid professional work experience. The city also frequently provides volunteer interships throughout the year.
Though availability of internships varies from year to year, the positions are traditionally in Administration/Finance, Public Works (Engineering), Community Development and Parks and Recreation. Internships have also been performed in Public Relations and the Police Department.
Applications for internships are solicited in the first quarter of each year and students must meet the specifications of the internship to which they are applying. Once hired, interns are given professional-level assignments to complete throughout the summer. The interns also participate in tours of various facilities (water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, landfill, recycling center, fire station). As a group, the intern class is tasked with planning and coordinating an employee appreciation event.
For more information about the internship program, please contact Human Resources Manager Deborah Hamilton at (314) 738-2202. Please do not send resumes; visit the Employment Opportunities page to see whether any opportunities are currently available and how to apply.
