Employment Opportunities

Description :

The criminal justice police internship program is designed to familiarize students pursuing an education in criminal justice or a related field with the operations of the Maryland Heights Police Department.  The program serves as an apprenticeship which combines practical experience and academic preparation.  The purpose of the internship is to provide the students an awareness of the many aspects of municipal law enforcement that they would not normally be exposed to in the academic portion of their education.  The student will not exercise any police powers during the internship.  Interns are often used interchangeably to describe part-time non-sworn apprentices assigned to clerical, administrative, or line functions.  The criminal justice internship is different to most in two ways.  First, the student will not receive financial compensation.  Secondly, the student will only serve as an observer while assigned on the street with an officer.

The individual hired for this position must pass a drug test and a background check.

The City of Maryland Heights requires all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain an exemption approved by the City before their employment date.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Students refine knowledge which is useful to later decisions regarding such matters as type of employer, place of employment and opportunity for and requirements of advancement.
  2. To develop an understanding and appreciation of the American system of justice.
  3. To foster an awareness of the civic, social and moral responsibilities of the criminal justice system to society.
  4. To provide training that results in increased efficiency and personal growth, and encourage within the student a desire for continuous growth, both professionally and individually.
  5. Provides the agency an opportunity to participate in upgrading the education of potential employees.
  6. Reduces turnover, because the employee will become adjusted to the job before accepting full-time employment.
  7. Improves the effectiveness of the criminal justice curriculum and the teaching staff through feedback from field practices.

 REQUIREMENTS

  1. The internship program should be entered only after a student completes a major portion of his/her formal education. 2. The student will not receive financial compensation from the police department. The privilege provided to the student to learn on-the-job and the work assignments completed for the agency will be considered a fair exchange.
  3. The student must complete a Maryland Heights Police Position Application (MHPD Form 110) and must sign the Internship Confidentiality Agreement (MHPD Form 112), and Authorization For Release of Information (MHPD Form 085) permitting the department to complete a background investigation. 4. The student must sign a waiver of liability (MHPD Form 053) to participate in the ride-along program.
  5. The work experience places no employment obligation upon either the student or the City of Maryland Heights.
