Thanks to All That Donated to Maria's Backpacks!

The City of Maryland Heights would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Maria's Backpacks School Supply Drive!

On August 26, we dropped off a total of 5,778 donated supplies to Pattonville’s Learning Center, which will be distributed throughout the entire district as the school year begins. This tremendous turnout has helped us to honor the memory of Maria Lucas, our fallen friend.

Maria always had a place in her heart for those in need, and began her career working with Special Education for the Ritenour School District. During summer breaks, Maria worked as a camp counselor for the City of Maryland Heights. In 2017, Maria was hired as a Customer Relations Specialist and became a shining presence at the Maryland Heights Community Center. We lost Maria in 2020 after a tragic incident, but the community continues to memorialize her kind and positive spirit by organizing this school supply drive in her memory.

This is the second year that the Maryland Heights Parks and Recreation Department, Maryland Heights Police Department, Maryland Heights Fire District and Maryland Heights Government Center collected school supplies to continue Maria’s legacy of compassion and care. The drive began on July 3(Maria’s birthday), and concluded on August 15th.

The third annual “Maria’s Backpacks” School Supply Drive will begin on July 3, 2023 - we will share more details as next summer rolls around!

Thanks again to all those who gave! Many students in need will be able to succeed thanks to these donations, and Maria's legacy will continue to live on.
