Road Construction on the Horizon
It oftentimes seems like road work pops up at the worst time and place when we're in a rush. However, maintaining our roads is crucial to our community, and well worth the time. As weather improves, crews will be out on more road construction projects during the spring and summer.
In Maryland Heights, there are three main entities that maintain our roadways: MODOT (who maintain highways and other state routes), St. Louis County Transportation (who maintains several of our main roads), and the City of Maryland Heights Public Works Department (who maintains city streets). To view a map of who maintains which roads, visit: www.marylandheights.com/streetmap
We’ve compiled a list of the projects that will be happening this summer, and a few that are just on the horizon still in the design phase so that you can stay alert, drive safely, and be updated with the most current news!
Maryland Heights Project
Fee Fee Road – from Westport Plaza Drive to Schuetz Road:
If you drive on Fee Fee Road between Westport Plaza Dr. and Schuetz, be aware of a closure that will be occurring during the next couple months. The City of Maryland Heights will be facilitating an extensive road project that includes: pavement replacement, milling, bridge repairs, and a diamond grind to smooth the pavement.
The project was approved by City Council in March, and will cost $1.7 million to complete. $630,000 of that cost will be federally reimbursed by MODOT.
Estimated time of completion: Fall 2023
If you have any questions with this project or any City-maintained roads, please contact Maryland Heights Public Works at (314) 738-2250 or utilize our online form system at www.marylandheights.com/ReportaProblem.
St. Louis County Projects
Lackland Road West of Schuetz:
This project involves the replacement of the current culvert. Construction will extend from Woodland Parkway on the east side to the west entrance at 11743 Lackland Road. Missouri American Water will be relocating a water main under the new culvert location. There will also be a mill and overlay of the mainline, updates to curb ramps, removal, and replacement of sidewalks. Estimated cost of the project is two million dollars.
Estimated time of completion: Fall 2023
Westport Plaza Drive Improvements:
Expect some delays near Westport Plaza as a pavement resurfacing project has begun that will extend from Glenmeade Dr. to Lackland Rd. Several repairs and updates will take place such as installing ADA-compliant curb ramps, sidewalk repairs and upgrading the traffic signals.
Estimated time of completion: December 2023
McKelvey Road Resurfacing Phase I:
Drivers on McKelvey will be happy to know that the pavement resurfacing from Ameling Rd. to Glenpark Dr. is finishing up after experiencing some weather delays from last season.
Estimated time of completion: Summer 2023
McKelvey Road Resurfacing Phase II:
After Phase I is completed, St. Louis County plans to start on Phase II, which will extend from Glenpark Dr. to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. This project will involve replacing the asphalt and adding ADA-compliant sidewalks on the east side of the roadway. Once Phase II is completed, pedestrians traveling on McKelvey will have safe access to various neighborhoods, nature trails and commercial areas - including the Community Center!
St. Louis County Road Projects Still in Plan Review
Creve Coeur Mill Road:
The plan to resurface this section from Prichard Farm Rd. to Interstate Dr. is nearing completion and construction is anticipated to begin in fall of 2023. All existing sidewalks and curb ramps will be removed and replaced to meet current ADA standards. This will require the removal and replacement of several residential driveway approaches.
Dorsett Road:
The design for the east side resurfacing project will begin later this year. St. Louis County anticipates that construction will begin in late 2025. The resurfacing of the west side will occur after the east side is completed. The plan for resurfacing and repairs made to the west side will include establishing a shared-use path on one side from Parkland Woods to McKelvey.
Bennington/McKelvey/Ameling:
Though it is quite a ways in the future, St. Louis County does have this section of road on the list to resurface and repair. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2024.
Prichard Farm Road Bridge:
Last July, Maryland Heights experienced a flash flooding event which caused damage to the supports of the bridge and it has been closed since. Unfortunately, it looks as though this bridge will likely remain closed for another year.
Per the St. Louis County website, bridge personnel are currently working with a design consultant to finalize a repair. The plan will be to protect the pipes from future erosion. The proposed plan will have to go through multiple entities for approval.
