Ice, Sleet or Snow, City Crews Keep Streets Clear
Every winter, the City's snow removal crews tackle the precipitation challenges of the season through hard work and preparation. The City's snowplows are manned by crews from the Departments of Public Works and Parks and Recreation. During weather events, these employees are divided into two snow shifts, A and B, which switch off every 12 hours until the snow event is complete. Each shift is comprised of one shift supervisor, one mechanic, one dispatcher and nine drivers.
Each driver is assigned a route that they memorize and become familiar with. Throughout the year, crews make practice runs to get used to street widths, parking patterns, turns, curves, etc. This preparation ensures that plowing goes as smooth as possible when snow or ice falls.
Parked cars are the most common hazard our crews encounter. The City asks that residents do not park vehicles on the street, especially in cul-de-sacs, during times of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Our crews can clear snow and apply deicers more quickly when they don't have to maneuver plows between parked cars. Residents are also encouraged to pre-clear “upstream” areas adjacent to their driveway in an effort to help minimize the amount of snow and ice deposited in front of their driveway. Please refer to the diagram below.
The City clears residential streets, collector streets and most commercial and industrial streets in the Westport area. Arterial roads and highways are the responsibility of St. Louis County and MoDOT. Property managers are responsible for apartment complexes and parking lots.
Residents with snow-related issues or questions may call the City at (314) 738-2250 or St. Louis County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works at (314) 615-8504. MoDOT can be contacted at (1-888) 275-6636.
