AARP Tax Aide Program Update

Many of our senior residents have utilized the AARP Tax Aide program. In the past, our Parks and Recreation Department partnered with AARP to provide a secure space and handled the registration process.

AARP relies heavily on their network of certified tax prep volunteers in order for this program to run. Due to COVID concerns, AARP is having difficulties securing enough volunteers to staff our location. At the time of print, AARP could not confirm whether they would have enough certified tax prep volunteers for this program to run in 2021 at the Maryland Heights Community Center.

We understand that tax prep season can be a stressful time, especially if you are not familiar with the process. We suggest the following:

• Contact AARP Missouri at 1-866-389-5627 and inquire about other free tax prep programs in your area. The representative will be able to find the closest location using your zip code. Even though the Maryland Heights Community Center may not be a location, there could be a different location within the St. Louis area where you can set up an appointment.

• Locate your nearest Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) or IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites by calling 1-800-906-9887 or clicking on the “Tax Counseling Locator” at www.benefits.gov/benefit/722.

• Call local tax preparation locations and inquire if they offer any kind of senior assistance.

• Ask a trusted friend or family member to help you file for free online at www.IRS.gov/FreeFile.

We understand that this program has assisted numerous Maryland Heights residents in the past. We look forward to working with AARP on this program in the future and providing them a secure location at the Community Center.
