Remembering Maria Lucas

Today, we remember and honor Maria Lucas, who lost her life one year ago in a tragic, senseless act of violence at the Maryland Heights Community Center. A joyful person and dedicated employee, Maria’s impact on the community will never be forgotten and is missed every day. Her caring disposition, love of people and service to Maryland Heights will continue to be honored through the Maria Lucas Excellent Customer Service Award, which will be presented annually by the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce to individuals in the business community who exemplify Maria’s character and work ethic. In addition to naming the award in her honor, the Chamber of Commerce recognized Maria Lucas as the first recipient of the award at their February meeting. A plaque naming award recipients is on display at the Maryland Heights Community Center.

Due to COVID-19 social distancing measures, the City of Maryland Heights has several virtual options for sharing memories and paying tribute to Maria including the Maria Lucas Memorial Facebook group and a slideshow of photos shared by her family, friends and co-workers. The slideshow will be posted on the City’s website and social media accounts. The City will host an in-person memorial event honoring Maria once it is safe to gather in large groups and will invite the public to participate. “Maria touched the lives of many people during her lifetime. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with her family and all who knew her,” said Mayor Mike Moeller. “It’s important that the City honor her memory, but do so in a safe manner cognizant of COVID-19 concerns. We encourage everyone to participate virtually, as well as in-person at our future event.” The community is encouraged to share memories on social media or by emailing mhlife@marylandheights.com.
