A Message from the Mayor - December/January

Winter is coming to Maryland Heights, and the cold weather promises to bring a festive atmosphere to our city! One of our favorite new traditions, the annual Holiday Tree Lighting at the Community Center, is the perfect example of this! We'll also be hosting a skating session with Santa Claus, playing elf on the shelf all around Maryland Heights, and helping our youngest residents make sure their holiday wishes make it safely to the North Pole in time for the elves to get gifts ready.

You don't have to celebrate Christmas to enjoy winter holiday spirit - all the lovebirds in the area are invited for a family friendly event on the ice at our Sweetheart Skate in February! We have even more information on upcoming Parks programs all the way through next spring in the Winter/Spring Parks Guide. It's never too early to start planning what events you'll be a part of!

Of course, cold weather isn't just a time to celebrate. Snow and low temperatures can pose a major risk to public safety, and it's our job to help make sure our residents are as well-informed as possible to get through chilly days with little trouble. One such way is by familiarizing yourself with proper parking in the event we need to run snow plows. Click here for our full story on plow safety. We've also detailed who maintains which streets within our city - if you ever have questions about road maintenance, click here for a handy list of which agencies maintain the streets in Maryland Heights.

It's always good to be cautious when leaving the house, and especially when going to visit others for long periods of time during the holidays. We've prepared some handy tips on how to keep your home safe from intruders during the winter and on how to protect your packages on the Police page.

Perhaps the most pressing way to remain safe is by having access to the most up-to-date information in case of emergencies. We're well aware of the urgent responsibility that local governments have to inform their communities when in need. After years of research, we've begun the process of rolling out a mass notification system to best serve our community - MH Alerts! This program uses text, phone, and app alerts to reach as many residents as possible during an emergency. We'll be doing a public test at 1 p.m. on New Year's Day - read our story about how it works ahead of the test run!

The new year will bring new developments, events, memories, and more. We're looking forward to all that lies ahead in 2023 and beyond - until then, stay safe and enjoy the holiday season!
